Liver Cleansing Detox Diet Side Effects

A liver detox diet can certainly provide many health benefits, but in the process of detoxifying your liver, you may also experience a few side effects. Here are a few of the potential side effects some people have experienced during their liver cleansing detox period.

Constipation or Diarrhea

A liver detox diet is specifically designed to help people achieve optimal health. However, it is not uncommon for people to experience either constipation or diarrhea (or even both) usually caused by a sudden change in their diet. For example, you may be going from a sugary, high carb diet to a healthy, high-fiber diet.

Once your body adjusts to the high-fiber consumption, the symptoms of diarrhea or constipation will eventually subside.

Gas and Bloating

Some people experience gas and bloating, which is also caused by the inclusion of more high-fiber-rich foods. These symptoms may be pronounced if you include ‘liver detoxing green smoothies.’

The gas and bloating should subside in a couple of days as the body adjusts; however, if the symptoms persist, simply reduce the foods that are causing the biggest problem.

Once you’ve worked out which foods are the main culprits, slowly add them back into your diet and see if your body has adjusted enough, so that they are no longer a problem.

Low Energy and Fatigue

A sudden decrease in sugar-laden, high-calorie foods can cause fatigue and low energy. Even though your stomach may feel full with all the healthy fiber-rich foods you are now consuming, these nutritious foods will have a lower calorie count. In turn, you may experience fatigue symptoms.

Remember, this is only temporary, as very soon, your energy levels will be better than before! So don’t cave into bad eating habits that will only temporarily give you a sugar high or boost.

Headaches

Headaches are sometimes experienced during the first few days of a liver detox diet. Headaches may feel like an impending migraine, a tension headache or cluster headache.

Do NOT take any pain-relieving medications for this headache. It is important to avoid taking any pain relievers so that you do not disrupt the detoxifying process. Your liver’s health is negatively affected by paracetamol etc.

If you develop a headache, ask for your partner to give you a relaxing head massage and have a little nap. Again, this is only temporary. It is part of the withdrawal process from the built-up toxins being released.

Nausea

Any detoxification can cause nausea. This can be remedied by making sure you are always hydrated. It is also important to rest and avoid tasks that are physically taxing, which can lead to feeling even more nauseous.

If your nausea advances to vomiting, you may be detoxing too fast, so make the necessary adjustments immediately, and do not hesitate to consult your health care provider if your nausea persists.
